Gay Arthur

Painting

“I have been fascinated with architecture my whole life. This interest did not reveal itself as an artistic expression until I became a student of fine arts at UTC in 1999. I love the sense of place that structures hold for the viewer. In turn, my own sense of place in time has been revealed as an important life issue for me. I love all things nostalgic.

Recurrent elements in my work include the intersection of geometric shapes, converging lines, and the interplay of the cast shadow and penetration of light. As a sculptor as well as a painter, I love the sculptural nature of oil paint and use varied methods of layering the paint from palate knife to glazing. Like the construction of a building, process is as important to me as the finished product.”

Gay was born in New York and raised in San Francisco and Philadelphia. She is married with two children and three grandchildren. After working as a dental hygienist for 25 years, Gay finally made a life-long dream come true by studying art at UTC and graduating with a BFA in Painting and Drawing in 2003. She is currently pursuing a career as a working artist.

Gay welcomes commissions to paint architectural structures from businesses to homes, as well as landscapes and charcoal portraits. Examples are available upon request.
