David Harris

“There is no doubt a piece of clay coming into balance feels really good. It relaxes the body and re-centers the mind. When going to my studio, I say I’m going to play in the mud. I also have a woodworking shop. Pottery is what I do for enjoyment; woodworking is what I do when I need something functional.

Workshops I have attended offered new inspiration about decoration and also ideas about the pot as a piece of art. My goal is to move from being a craftsman to becoming an artist.”

Although a high school history teacher until 2012, David’s life as a potter began in 1994 after his late wife gave him a gift of three pottery lessons. He developed his talent with the help of his best friend, Jack Davidson, sharing his studio for several years, and by attending workshops.

A native of Chattanooga, TN, David attended Baylor High School where he graduated valedictorian of his class, and then the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating with a BA in history.
