MARY WHITTLE

Hand printed etchings inspired by natural flora and larger aquatic birds that winter along the Tennessee River. Hand printed on 100 percent cotton paper that, with proper care, will become family heirlooms.

A pen, pencil, or a piece of chalk has always been nearby, but etching was a surprise encounter for this artist.  While in college, I had signed up for an etching class, without having a clue what that was!

Original intaglio prints such as etchings allow the artist to draw into and sculpt the metal “plate” with the help of a corrosive, hand print using color or neutral inks, and embellish as creatively as needed.  It turned out; this was just the sort of flexibility that kept my interest over the years.  Monotypes are one-of-a-kind images that go through the press, but the printing plate is not etched.

I enjoy teaching the new, non-toxic printmaking techniques in my studio as well as at the John Campbell Folk School and various community art centers.  My works are exhibited at juried museum shows, galleries and outdoor arts shows around the country.   Enjoy!
